Reading group: Stable homotopy theory

Reading group: Stable homotopy theory

Tuesdays from 11 am – 12:30 pm, SMRI Seminar Room (A12 Macleay Room 301), starting March 10th, 2026

Details: Stable homotopy theory is concerned with the study of topological invariants that remain stable after repeated application of the suspension functor. The principal objects of study in this field are the (superficially chaotic) homotopy groups of higher dimensional spheres, which we will study in this reading group! Along the way we will talk about spectral sequences, Eilenberg-MacLane spaces, Steenrod operations, and many other things, with the goal of understanding the Adams spectral sequence by the end of semester. We will work through Mosher and Tangora’s textbook Cohomology Operations and Applications in Homotopy Theory. A website for the reading group may be accessed here

Organised by Declan Zammit (dzam8704@uni.sydney.edu.au)
